COSMOS STANDARD is a non-commercial association that was established in 2010 by leading European certification organizations. The founders were BDIH (Germany), Cosmebio and Ecocert (France), Soil Association (England) and ICEA (Italy). Together they developed an international standard for natural and organic cosmetics, which combines several European certification schemes into one.
Products certified by COSMOS-Standard are always marked with the logo of one of the founders with addition of the phrase "COSMOS NATURAL" or "COSMOS ORGANIC".
COSMOS-ORGANIC standard:
- At least 95% of ingredients must be natural. It is possible to use up to 5% of synthetic ingredients from the ingredients approved by this standard.
- At least 95% of herbal ingredients must be organic.
- At least 20% of ingredients from the total product weight should be organic for non-washable products and not less than 10% - for washable .
- Exact percentage of organic components must be specified.
COSMOS-NATURAL standard:
- Products must contain organic ingredients, but percentage is not specified.
- Optionally manufacturer can specify percentage of organic ingredients from the total product weight at the back label.
Natural cosmetics, certified by ICEA, meet the following requirements:
• Consist of certified natural herbal and animal components
• Do not contain any prohibited harmful substances
• Do not contain genetically modified products
• Not tested on animals
• Do not contain alcohol
• The product is made in biodegradable packaging
• There are no oil refining products, synthetic dyes, flavors and forbidden preservatives
Vegan standard requirements: It is prohibited to use any additives, ingredients and impurities of animal origin. The development and manufacture of the products must not involve experiments or testing on animals. The development and production of the product must not involve genetically modified organisms (GMO), containing animal genes.
